Too often curriculum is mistaken for standards. What many educators (and central office folks who insist on "fidelity") don't realize is that curriculum in Oregon is dictated by the Oregon State Standards, not by the district purchased curriculum. This session will focus on how to teach the Standards while still using authentic literature. Learn how to be intentional about selections and how to use them to teach critical strategies.

This fun and interactive workshop is intended for any teacher who wants to help his/her students become actively engaged in reading. ?Do your eyes glaze over when someone mentions autobiography? Mine do, or did. Let me show you how to take snapshots, or life's vignettes, from your life history and add convincing voice and credibility to each new story, even the one where the leprechauns and fairy folk came out to play...really. An additional use of autobiography will be demonstrated using a poem format, the "I Am From" poem, which can be used for many different purposes. Both activities make use of autobiography, neither involves yawning.
