MORNING
SESSIONS
Session A - 8:30-10:00
Session A1 (Grades
K-2)) Use Writing Journals to Grow Seed Ideas - Judy Davies, Eugene 4J Teacher
?Based on the powerful reading/writing connection advocated in Katie Wood Ray's books as well as those of Ralph Fletcher and other professionals in the field of children’s writing, we will explore the idea of using a writer's notebook or journal to store “seed” ideas that, with nurturing, will grow into treasured pieces of writing. We will also take a close look at Debbie Miller's nonfiction text features and traits.
Session A2 (Grades
3-8) Supercharge Your Classroom with Nonfiction - Robert Young, Writing Consultant and Children's Author
?Looking to energize both your teaching and your students' learning? Try nonfiction—the real stuff! Create a community of curiosity by engaging your students with questions and guiding them in seeking answers as well as sharing their finds. Help students make sense of their world by writing about the people, places, and things that matter most to them. No prerequisites for this session; bring wonder and passion.
Session A3 (Grades
3-12) Read Like a Reader, Read Like a Writer -
Bette Shoemaker, Language Arts Consultant
?In this session participants will learn strategies to help students "read like a writer" in that they will learn how to pay attention to the author's craft and then incorporate these techniques into their own writing. Examples will be provided for use with students in upper elementary, middle and high school. Blackline masters will also be provided to use with your own literary selections.
Session A4 (Grades 3-12) -This Session Has Been Cancelled. Cinderella as You've Never Known Her: A Deep, Complex, and Multicultural Look - Paula Wilkes, Pacific University
?Cinderella, whose stepsisters go to great lengths to force their too large feet into Cinderella's petite, delicate footwear, emerges in many versions from around the world. Cinderella finds her prince from Mexico to China, from India to the shores of Lake Ontario, and all points in between. We have employed dimensions of depth and complexity and many thinking skill levels to allow teachers to differentiate for all learners.
Session
B - 10:30-12:00
Session B1 (Grades K-5) How to Use the New Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award Nominees in Your Classroom -
Karen Antikajian, Language Arts Consultant
?Learn about the five books nominated for ORA’s Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award for 2011 and how you can use these books and related books in your classroom. The nominated books are available for checkout from EERC so you can read them to your students and let each student vote for a favorite. Participants will receive a handout listing 25 or more activities for each book . A LARGE packet with student worksheets and more detailed instructions will be available for $5 to cover printing costs. Many of the activities work well with any book.
Session B2 (Grades
K-12) Bring Writing Alive with Web 2.0 Tools - Kacey Kintscher, Corvallis Teacher and Cheridy Aduviri
?Explore how to bring writing alive for grades K-12 with free, online web 2.0 tools that are accessible 24/7. Presenters will share first-hand experience and examples of student ELLs and K-12+ blogs and glogs. Participants will explore a variety of tools that can be embedded in blogs or stand alone as meaningful writing instructional tools. These include online visual dictionaries; digital story telling tools like VoiceThreads, Kerpoof, Jing; those to create your own online comics and books; and collaborative writing tools such as Wall Wisher, Primary Word Wall, LinoIt and Titan Pad. There will be hands-on experience and question/answer time.
Session B3 (Grades
4-12) Reading and Writing in the Content Areas - Dr. Alexa Parker, Retired, University of New Mexico
?As students progress through school, they must first learn to read and then read to learn. Teachers attending this workshop will see examples of five literacy strategies that will help students read and write effectively in the content areas.
Session B4 (Grades
4-12) This Session Has Been Cancelled. New Graduation Requirements for Reading: WHAT ARE THEY? How Can Students Meet Them? - Dr. Yvonne Fasold, Language Arts Consultant
?Are you prepared for the reading changes coming in 2012? What are the new graduation requirements for reading? What are the two ways students can meet them? Come to this class to learn about the new requirements and the importance of using a variety of materials and strategies to boost reading comprehension and test-taking abilities for students in your classrooms. You’ll leave the class with new information and a packet of materials to use in your classrooms.
AFTERNOON SESSIONS
Session C - 1:15-2:45
Session C1 (Grades
K-5) Letter Writing in This Tech Age of Emails, My Space, Face Book, and Podcasting - Judy Davies, Eugene 4J Teacher
Help your students experience the joy of purposeful writing and the reading of real letters from family and friends—and yes, pen pals, too. Incorporates diversity, geography, and language arts. Life is all about relationships and communication. What better way to “get in touch and stay in touch” than by writing letters on old-fashioned stationery?
Session C2 (Grades
K-12) Book It! Using Easy Folded Books to Motivate Writing -
Karen Antikajian, Language Arts Consultant
Learn to make many different folded books that your students can use to display their writing—an excellent way to motivate students to write AND to revise. These books can be used in all content areas. They range from simple ones using post-its, folded paper, and paper bags to more complicated Magic Books, Character Books, and Circle Books. Something for all grade levels. Come to have fun and create lots of samples!.
Session C3 (Grades 6-12) - Teach Spelling Strategies and Systems—Not Just Words - Dr. Yvonne Fasold, Language Arts Consultant
?Do you have students who struggle with spelling? Not a surprise considering that our language incorporates patterns from so many different languages. Did you know there are 1,584 ways to spell the word seek? But if you are aware of some patterns and principles, you can reduce it to 480 (with some being more likely than others). This session will provide you with practical suggestions and strategies that you can share with your students to make their lives easier and more productive. Used very successfully at the high school level and applicable for middle school.
Final
Session - 3:00 - 3:30
All Participants - Meet in the library for wrap-up session in which board members will share and discuss some recent favorite picture books, chapter books, and professional books. You are welcome to bring a book to share. We will finish with more
door prizes and Professional Development Certificates.
3:30-4:10 - Credit participants meet
with Professor Nathanial Teich to finalize extended projects and set due dates.
